HMRC’s GOV.UK One Login is the new way for individuals and businesses to access Government services online. From now on, anyone registering for HMRC online services for the first time will need to create a GOV.UK One Login instead of a Government Gateway account. Existing Government Gateway users will not be affected immediately and can continue using their current credentials.
The new system is designed to provide a single, secure login for a wide range of Government services. Users will sign in using an email address and password rather than a 10 to 12-digit Government Gateway ID. Identity verification will take place through the GOV.UK One Login app, which uses methods such as face scans, photo identification and security questions to confirm identity.
HMRC has recognised that this change will affect many taxpayers, accountants and agents who rely on Government Gateway for tasks such as submitting self assessment returns and managing tax affairs. To minimise disruption, the transition will be phased and carefully monitored. HMRC has confirmed that existing Gateway users do not need to take any action at this stage and will be contacted directly when it is time to switch. Full migration is expected to be completed by the end of 2027.
Customers who already use GOV.UK One Login for other services, such as managing their State Pension or accessing Companies House services, must continue using Government Gateway for HMRC services for now.
When fully introduced, GOV.UK One Login will provide access to more than 200 Government services, including Making Tax Digital, company filings, passport renewals and driving licence applications. Support is available for those who struggle with digital access, although telephone assistance requires a six-digit code generated online before contacting the helpline.
